About the Course
Most bass courses focus on theory, scales, and note choice.
Those things matter—but knowing what notes to play is only part of the equation.
What makes great bass players unforgettable is how they play them.
In the Pocket is a 6-week applied learning workshop designed to help bass players develop the time, feel, groove, and musical awareness that make the music feel great.
Through guided transcription study, listening, discussion, and hands-on application, you’ll analyze iconic bass players known for exceptional groove and learn how to apply those concepts directly to your own playing.
This isn’t about memorizing basslines.
It’s about understanding the deeper musical decisions behind them:
Why does this groove feel so good?
What creates forward motion?
How does note length change the pocket?
What role do articulation, attack, subdivision, and space play?
How do legendary players make simple parts feel incredible?
Each week, we’ll break down real musical examples, study groove concepts from legendary bass players, and put those ideas into practice through applied playing exercises designed to improve your feel in real musical situations. By the end, you’ll be able to build basslines that feel grounded, musical, and stylistically authentic—and understand a system for bassline construction that can be applied across soul and groove-based styles.
If you’ve ever felt like your bass playing has the right notes—but still doesn’t quite feel right—this course is built for you.
