    Ryan Roberts

    Double Bass Jazz Workshop

    Ryan Roberts is a Los Angeles-based jazz bassist, educator, and founder of The Bass Shed Academy. With a deep foundation in the jazz tradition and years of professional performance experience, Ryan brings a dynamic, groove-focused approach to teaching. At LowEnd Lab, he leads the Double Bass Jazz Workshop, helping students develop feel, phrasing, and creative expression through the lens of the upright bass.

    Steve Billman

    Bass Guitar Workshop

    Steve Billman is a veteran session bassist, educator, and longtime faculty member at Los Angeles College of Music. With decades of experience across jazz, fusion, pop, and gospel, Steve brings a deep well of knowledge and practical insight to every lesson. At LowEnd Lab, he leads the Bass Guitar Workshop, helping players of all levels refine their groove, technique, and musical voice in a focused, hands-on environment.

    Dr. Matt Hare

    Classical Workshop

    Dr. Matt Hare is a seasoned double bassist, educator, and orchestral performer with a deep passion for classical music and pedagogy. With experience spanning symphony halls, chamber ensembles, and academic settings, he brings clarity, precision, and expressiveness to every lesson. At LowEnd Lab, Dr. Hare leads the Classical Bass Workshop, guiding students through technique, phrasing, and musical interpretation.

LowEnd Lab – FAQ

  • LowEnd Lab is open to electric and double bassists of all ages and skill levels. Whether you're just starting out or a seasoned player looking to refine your sound, you'll find something valuable here.

  • Sessions take place on the last Saturday of each month at Eagle Rock Covenant Church in Los Angeles from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

    • General Admission: $40

    • Early Bird Ticket: $25 (limited availability)

    • Students under 16 attend FREE

  • Visit thebassshedacademy.org/lowendlab to register and secure your spot.

  • Yes! Please bring your own bass (electric or upright) and any accessories you use regularly (cables, bow, etc.). A small backline is provided for shared use during the workshop.

  • Each session dives into key areas like technique, tone shaping, phrasing, improvisation, and musical interpretation.

    • Each instructor will provide downloadable resources before the session so attendees can start preparing in advance.

    • Students are also encouraged to bring in a piece of music they’re currently working on for review and feedback during the workshop.

  • Absolutely! In fact, we encourage it. Each session offers new material and opportunities to build on what you’ve learned. You can also purchase a Summer Pass for access to all three summer dates at a discounted rate.

  • LowEnd Lab is presented by The Bass Shed Academy, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to music education and community engagement.

  • Yes! We encourage one parent or guardian to accompany each child student for support. Due to space limitations, we kindly ask that only one adult attend per student under 16. Thank you for helping us maintain a comfortable and focused learning environment for all participants.
